I cannot find much on who came up with the Suspender Minky, but it does originate from England, and this is just my variation (JoziFly Variation) of this pattern.

An extremely quick and easy pattern, that pushes all the buttons for those Autumn fry feeding rainbows and browns, on still waters. (Reference Barry Ord Clarke)

Excellent pattern for those days when trout are feeding near the surface or smashing dry in the shallows. The Suspender Minky gets smashed hard.

A strip and pause creates a wake on the surface and mimics a wounded or stressed baitfish and is a must have in any Stillwater anglers box.

Materials:

#8 Streamer hook (long shank)

Ufudu 4mm Real Eye dumbbell

7.5mm Foam Cylinder Orange

FL Fire Orange Marabou

Black Zonker (Magnum)

Pearl Cactus Chenille (Large)

Step 1:

Lay down a thread base starting behind the hook eye, form a base approximately 3 hook eye lengths rearward.

Step 2:

Roughly locate the centre of the foam cylinder and cut at a 45-degree angle.

Step 3:

Tie in the foam as you would typically on a foam Emerger approximately one hook eye length behind the hook eye.

Step 4:

Tie in the 4mm Real Eye Dumbbell on the underside of the shank just behind the foam tie in point.

Step 5:

Tie in the Fl Fire Orange Marabou (for the length, roughly a shank length would suffice)

Step 6:

Tie in the Black magnum Zonker by splitting the fur to expose a tie in point, please don’t use saliva to tame the fur, get a small bowl of water….. Yuk….. anyway…. allowing to tail to span about 2 shank lengths.

Step 7:

Tie in the large cactus chenille…. Why large??? I’ll explain in a bit….

FOSAF_5871.jpg

Step 8:

Wrap the chenille with tight, touching turns all the way to just behind the dumbbells…. You can figure eight a couple wraps between the eyes, it's all up to you.

So why the large chenille, densely packed like this?????

Again… I’ll explain in a bit….

Step 9:

Pull the Zonker strip forward and secure just behind the foam… please do not split the fur to make a tie in point, rather trap/tie in over to the fur, it makes for a denser and nicer finish IMO.

Advance thread to behind the hook eye and whip finish.

Ok now for that Chenille bit….

With the large chenille densely packed we can now trim in a wee taper into the underbelly of our Suspender Minkie for a nicer looking profile…

There is so much one can do with this pattern….

Believe me I know….. LOL….

How to Fish this pattern:

Floating

Intermediate

Or

Sinking lines depending on the scenario.

Slow, fast or figure of eight retrieve.

This pattern can also be fished static due to its ability to stay suspended in the water column…

Tie it… Try it…
