It is with great sadness that FOSAF learnt of the passing of Roger Baert who had been ill for some time. During a recent visit to a hospital he picked up a superbug and his heart lost the battle with the infection and he passed away yesterday morning.

The son of a Belgian diplomat, Roger start fishing at an early age. He fished extensively in Persia (later known as Iran) and the Indian Ocean islands and when he arrived in South Africa joined the Transvaal Flyfishers club in the seventies and later became a shareholder in Dullstroom Trout Farm which rents their waters to the club. When he moved to KZN he became manager and part owner of a well-known fly-fishing shop, the Flyfisherman which was first based in Maritzburg but later relocated to Hilton Road. After selling the shop Roger and Brigitte then retired to France but returned to Johannesburg about 10 years ago to be closer to family.

A true gentleman and well loved by the flyfishing community he will be sorely missed but not forgotten by his many friends. Our condolences go to Brigitte, Candice and his sons.
