On Friday 18 Sept. 2020 Minister Creecy of the Department of Environmental Affairs, Forestry & Fisheries promulgated new AIS lists in Government Notice 1003 which are due to come into effect on 20 October 2020. This listing of trout as invasive threatens the trout value chain in SA by requiring a new and additional range of permits for almost everything that ordinarily needs to done to sustain the value chain. This will create unnecessary significant economic and social harm and runs counter to the agreed Operation Phakisa outcomes. This is extreme bad faith because the Minister is defending FOSAF’s court application (soon to be allocated court dates) challenging the legality of the previous draft lists and regulations. FOSAF has requested the withdrawal of the Notice. If the Minister does not give an undertaking to do so, FOSAF will have no alternative but to bring an urgent court application to prevent implementation of the notice.
