The South African Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Expo is the largest event of its kind in South Africa. It is the only show in the country that currently caters exclusively for fly fishermen and women. The event is a celebration of fly fishing, a coming together of the clans as it were.

The 2017 Event will take place on 24 and 25 June 2017 at ‘Toadbury Hall’ , 5kms from Lanseria airport just outside of Johannesburg and promises to be even more action packed than last year’s event. Activities on offer include workshops presented by some of the country’s top fly fisherman including the likes of Tom Sutcliffe, Peter Brigg, MC Coetzer, Garth Wellman, Mark Murray, Tim Rolston and Terry Babich to name a few. Subjects covered will include Fly fishing for Small stream trout, Largemouth yellowfish, Carp and Barbel, Tigerfish, Still water trout and Euro nymphing.

The IFFF (International Federation of Fly fishers) will also be presenting Casting workshops on both days. There will also be over 20 top local Fly tiers demonstrating what they do best including the likes of Herman Botes, Murray Peddar, Elpheus Ndlovu, Gordon van der Spuy and Garth Wellman to name a few. You’ll be able to sit with them one on one and see them tie the flies they are famous for whilst asking them questions about them.

South African Fly fishing doyen Tom Sutcliffe described the 2016 event in his monthly newsletter as follows: “I think the word festival better describes the occasion than ‘Expo’, because it was far more than just an ‘expo’. It was a rich mulch of what fly fishing comprises in its broadest definition……….”

The goal of the event is to bring fly fishermen and women together by providing a festive environment in which cross pollination can take place. The event was designed to give fly fishing entrepreneurs, retailers, distributors, artists, fly tiers, rod builders, net makers, etc. a platform to exhibit and market what they do. Furthermore, the Expo plays back into the community by actively funding and supporting worthwhile fly-fishing projects.  In 2016 we gave over R60000 to worthwhile causes, including Boland Fly Fishing, Western Province Fly Fishing and FOSAF   (The  Federation of Southern African Fly Fishers).  This year the goal is to carry on with what we achieved in the last Expo, but to develop, refine and improve the concept further. The Expo is totally unique in that it applauds and promotes the idea of artisans in fly fishing. It is a family event because that’s what fly fishermen are, family.

We have structured the 2017 event in such a way as to make it accessible to all. It doesn’t matter if  if you’re a raw beginner or a seasoned connoisseur. This Expo was designed for you and it aims at making your fly-fishing life even better. We actually guarantee that it will.
